On The Issues
Shenna Bellows grew up the daughter of a carpenter and a greenhouse worker, and she knows what a broken system does to families — and how to fight back. From leading the ACLU of Maine's fight for reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ equality, to standing up to Trump's corruption as Secretary of State, Shenna has spent her career taking on tough fights and doing the right thing, even when it wasn't easy. Here's where she stands.
-
Shenna believes what Democrats have been doing to stand up to Donald Trump isn't working, and Maine needs a Senator ready to lead a real grassroots movement against him rather than manage the status quo. As Secretary of State, she kicked Donald Trump off the ballot because January 6 was an insurrection, and she faced down threats and attacks from Trump while protecting Maine's elections from his corruption. Protecting free and fair elections in Maine has been her job — she wants to bring that same vigilance to Washington before it's too late.
She's not new to this fight and in the Senate, Shenna will be a fierce protector of our democracy and will fight back against Donald Trump as he tramples our Constitution.
-
Shenna has been fighting a broken system that's held Mainers back for years, long before Trump took office. She knows that this fight isn't just about one man; it's about the corporations, the lobbyists, and the political structures that have left working families behind for a generation. And she will stand up to the career politicians who are enriching themselves instead of helping working people, by working to end insider stock trading, cracking down on prediction markets, and banning lobbying after members leave Congress.
-
Shenna supports Medicare for All. America's current healthcare system is a national disgrace. No one in Maine should have to choose between paying rent and seeing a doctor. Healthcare is a human right — no one should be sick because they're poor, or poor because they're sick.
In the Senate, she'll fight to rein in the insurance companies, big pharma, and pharmacy benefit managers driving up the cost of premiums, deductibles, and prescription drugs — including pushing PBMs to pass rebates directly to patients instead of pocketing them, and working to let Mainers import lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada.
She'll also push to reverse cuts to Medicaid, secure more federal investment in rural hospitals, birthing centers, and community health centers so they can keep their doors open, and expand loan forgiveness programs to get more doctors and nurses into rural Maine.
-
Shenna wants ICE out of Maine and off our streets. Shenna is the only candidate in this race who has taken on Trump and ICE. By blocking them from getting undercover license plates as Secretary of State, Shenna made it harder for ICE to operate like a secret paramilitary force.
As Senator, Shenna will not fund ICE until it is completely overhauled, including getting agents off our streets, ending mass deportations, and ensuring real accountability for wrongdoing. Immigration enforcement should focus on genuine public safety threats, not terrorizing communities and separating families.
-
Housing, utilities, and groceries have gotten more expensive while corporate monopolies keep raking in profits. Shenna wants to take on the corporations ripping off Maine families and make things less expensive. In the Senate, that means using federal antitrust enforcement to break up the monopolies driving up prices, fighting for federal investment in housing construction and first-time homebuyer support, and pushing for clean energy investment that actually lowers bills for working families instead of padding utility company profits.
-
Shenna has spent her career fighting for reproductive rights. As a national organizer for the ACLU, she helped organize the 2004 March for Women's Lives in Washington, and she led the fight to protect abortion access when anti-abortion Republicans controlled Augusta. As a state senator, she consistently defended abortion coverage, and as Secretary of State, she's worked to protect reproductive healthcare providers from harassment and legal attacks from out of state.
In the Senate, she'll fight to codify the right to abortion into federal law and defend access to mifepristone and medication abortion against federal restrictions. She believes reproductive healthcare is healthcare, and she's never backed down from that fight.
-
Shenna has organized for LGBTQ+ equality for over two decades — helping lead Maine Won't Discriminate in 2005 to end anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination in education, credit, and housing, and serving on the executive committee of Maine's marriage equality campaign for seven years until it passed in 2012. She and her husband waited to get married until their gay and lesbian friends could legally marry too.
In the Senate, she'll fight to protect marriage equality and defend LGBTQ+ Mainers from discrimination, just as she has for over twenty years.
-
Shenna wants to end Citizens United and fight the corruption that's let corporate money drown out the voices of ordinary people. She believes corruption is running rampant in Washington, and getting big money out of politics is where accountability starts.scription
-
Shenna believes Benjamin Netanyahu has committed genocide in Gaza and created a horrific and morally reprehensible humanitarian crisis. Shenna does not believe that any more US taxpayer dollars should pay for offensive weapons for Israel.
-
Shenna has worked on environmental issues her whole career, from conservation commission work protecting watersheds and public lands, to a 100% voting record with environmental groups as a state senator, to championing a Green New Deal for Maine.
In the Senate, she'll fight for the federal investment Maine needs to build out clean energy — solar, heat pumps, and transit infrastructure — and make sure that investment reaches working families instead of getting swallowed by utility company profits. Shenna will be a leader in the fight to combat Climate Change and stand up to Donald Trump and the corporate polluters who have only made our problems worse.

Maine's relationship with the Wabanaki Nations — the Houlton Band of Maliseet, Mi'kmaq Nation, Penobscot Nation, and Passamaquoddy Tribe — is shaped by a federal law: the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act. Shenna has spent over twenty years working alongside tribal leaders, including on the Legislature's Judiciary Committee, and she's met personally with the chiefs of all four nations to commit to fixing this injustice.
In the Senate, she'll fight for the federal changes needed to recognize full tribal sovereignty for the Wabanaki Nations — because it's the right thing to do, and because empowering tribal nations benefits every Mainer.
